A trip to Ethiopia that we can consider as a true expedition and that will allow us to discover one of the most inhospitable areas of the planet, the region of the Danakil desert, the true cradle of humanity.

We will start the trip visiting two of the most interesting markets in Ethiopia, Sembete and Bati.

We will contact the Afar ethnic group, whose main source of subsistence is in the extraction of salt in the Dalol salt flats. We will be able to admire one of the most intense natural spectacles that can be seen today, the constant eruptions of the volcanoes in the area and, as the main one, the Ertale volcano, which we can admire from the crater itself, an unforgettable experience.

DAY 05 // TUESDAY: SEMERA – AHMED ELA (B, L, D)

Breakfast. The road will take us to Ahmed Ela through a hot journey, where Dalol is located, one of the most striking geographical features of Africa, even visible from space.
The Danakil Depression, encompassing a good portion of the Afar region, is one of the hottest and most inhospitable places on earth, with many points located more than 100 meters below sea level and midday temperature. rises above 50 °C. It is the site of a dry salty lake from which Ethiopians since time immemorial have extracted salt plates, which are used for consumption and as regular currency. The Afar load these blocks on the backs of dromedaries, which help transport them to the different weekly markets in the region. In the afternoon transfer to Lake Assale to watch the sunset. Overnight at Ahmed Ela with local and outdoor beds. Accommodation in bivouac.

DAY 06 // WEDNESDAY: AHMED ELA – DALLOL – ERTA ELA (B, L, D)

Early morning departure to Dalol (-124 m, 19 km, 30 min). Dallol is an extraordinary and unreal hill, about 50m high, a hydrothermal iceberg grown out of the salt crust of the Danakil Depression. The earth boils and the geysers are in constant activity and sculpt multiform figures: the landscape is transformed into colorful gardens, large circular stones, lakes of unreal colors, with small volcanic cones protruding from the smoke.
3-hour excursion to explore everything around and on the way back we will also explore Lake Assa Ale, a spur of reddish rock in the middle of the plain, a concretion formed by magnesium sulfate salt that has healing properties, a double island that emerges from the sea of salt that surrounds it.
We will leave for the Erta Ale volcano passing through an inhospitable territory. After arriving at one of the Afar villages called Dodom, we will have a brief reception from the head of the clan and he will inform us of the necessary security to access the Erta Ale. We will have a picnic lunch in the village.
We will then continue to the base of the volcano, where the cars will stop in the parking area. We will be prepared for 1 hour of trekking up to the top of the volcano.
The Erta Ale volcano is unique in the world, because it has been active with its lava lake for the last 125 years and the magma lake can be observed from every corner of the crater rim. It is the result of the diverging triple tectonic plates in East Africa.
The arrival at Erta Ale will be around 8:00 PM and upon arrival at the top we will have around 15 minutes of walking to reach the edge of the crater. We will enjoy this unique environment, around the lava lake.
Camping around the crater ridge on the ground with mattresses in the open air or in local cabins. Accommodation in bivouac.

DAY 07 // THURSDAY: ERTA ELA – LAKE AFRERA (B, L, D)
